Walking and hiking trails

Trails, from the river to the ridge

New River Trail State Park is a 57-mile linear park built on an old railroad right-of-way, and it runs through Carroll County between Pulaski and Galax. It follows the New River for 39 of those miles and is open to hikers, cyclists and horseback riders. Cliffview Campground, a primitive trailside tent campground overlooking Chestnut Creek, sits in Carroll County near Galax.

In Hillsville itself, the Beaver Dam Creek Trail follows the creek for about three quarters of a mile and is a listed birding site. Crooked Creek and Stewart's Creek wildlife management areas (under fishing, below) are open to hikers as well, and up on the Parkway there is a half-mile interpretive trail at Mabry Mill and the fence exhibits and observation tower at Groundhog Mountain.

Local schools

Carroll County Public Schools

Carroll County Public Schools runs the county's public schools from its central office on Pine Street in Hillsville. Virginia's School Quality Profile lists Fancy Gap, Gladesboro, Gladeville, Hillsville, Laurel and Oakland elementary schools, St. Paul School, Carroll County Middle School and Carroll County High School.

For trades and continuing education, Wytheville Community College runs its Crossroads Institute on East Stuart Drive in Galax, with programs that include practical nursing, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, welding, CDL and heavy equipment operation. The county's own profile also points to New River Community College, Radford University and Virginia Tech within about an hour's drive.

School assignments by address change over time, so check the division's site or call the central office.

The Blue Ridge Parkway

Thirty miles of Parkway on the southern edge

The Blue Ridge Parkway passes through the southern part of Carroll County, and the county's 2024 comprehensive plan puts thirty miles of it within the county. The main way on and off in Carroll County is at Fancy Gap, where the Parkway crosses U.S. 52, close to Interstate 77.

Two stops sit inside the county: Groundhog Mountain (Milepost 188.8), a picnic area with 28 sites and a log observation tower built in 1942, and the Orlean Puckett Cabin (Milepost 189.9). The Blue Ridge Music Center (Milepost 213) sits at the county's edge toward Galax, with an outdoor amphitheater and a mountain-music museum, and Mabry Mill (Milepost 176) is a short drive up the Parkway, three miles from Meadows of Dan.

Parks and outdoor recreation

Ball fields, the river and the ridge

Carroll County Parks and Recreation runs Recreation Park off Interstate 77 at Exit 14, with a splash pad, two baseball fields, a walking trail, a playground and two shelters, plus youth and adult leagues in baseball and softball, basketball, football and cheer, soccer and pickleball. It also books the Woodlawn School gymnasium and the Dugspur Community Center.

The New River flows through Carroll County, and New River Trail State Park follows it for boating, tubing and paddling as well as the trail. The county's own profile lists orchards, Christmas tree farms and pumpkin and vegetable farms across the county, and the Southwest Virginia Farmers' Market at Exit 14 is open year-round except Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Fishing

Trout streams and a big-fish river

Crooked Creek Wildlife Management Area (1,882 acres) has a fee fishing area with about 2.8 miles of native brook trout water and 3.5 miles of water stocked with rainbow and brown trout. The fee season runs from the first Saturday in April through September 30, seven days a week. In season you need a state fishing license plus a daily permit; out of season, a trout license.

Stewart's Creek Wildlife Management Area, off the Parkway in Carroll County, is native brook trout water on 4.8 miles of stream, catch and release only: single-hook artificial lures, no bait in your possession, and every fish goes back.

The New River holds smallmouth bass, walleye, muskellunge and channel catfish, and Virginia DWR records the state-record smallmouth and muskellunge both coming out of it. The water above and below Buck Dam in Carroll County carries its own regulations, so read DWR's New River page before you go, and carry your license.

What else you get

The roads. Interstate 77 runs through the county with four exits, about twelve miles south of the I-77 and I-81 interchange, and U.S. 58 crosses it. The county reports water and sewer at all four exits. Natural gas service runs through Appalachian Natural Gas, which bought the county-built system in 2016.

The music. The Crooked Road, Virginia's 330-mile heritage music trail, runs into the county, and the Old Fiddlers' Convention in Galax, which calls itself the world's oldest and largest, held its 90th edition in August 2026. The Blue Ridge Music Center's concert calendar is a few miles down the Parkway at Milepost 213.

Labor Day weekend. The Town of Hillsville is home to the Labor Day Flea Market, which runs from the Friday before through Labor Day Monday, rain or shine.

History. The Carroll County Historical Society and Museum occupies the 1873 courthouse on North Main Street in Hillsville, the site of the 1912 courthouse tragedy. Admission is free, and the historic drama Thunder in the Hills is performed there each spring, in the same courtroom.

Healthcare and work. Twin County Regional Healthcare in Galax, in the center of the Twin Counties of Grayson and Carroll, is a 141-bed hospital with acute, ambulatory and emergency care. Wildwood Commerce Park, a 270-acre commercial and industrial site next to I-77 Exit 19, is the county's regional business park, and the Twin County Chamber of Commerce represents Carroll, Grayson and Galax.

The towns and communities. Hillsville is the county seat. Fancy Gap, Laurel Fork, Sulphur Springs and Pine Creek are among its districts, Woodlawn, Dugspur and Cana are among its communities, and the City of Galax sits at the county's edge as its own independent city. The county itself says it is the only one in Virginia with land in both the Blue Ridge and the Piedmont.

If you are looking at land here, the things that make the county pleasant to live in also decide what a parcel is worth: elevation and grade, road access, and which utilities reach the site. That is the read we give every buyer, on the Need a builder? page and on every listing card.

Questions

Straight answers, first.

Can Bowman help me find a home or land in Carroll County?

Yes. Land and development are the specialty, and we handle houses, farms and commercial property too. Tell us what you are looking for and the area you have in mind, and we will send what fits and read each parcel for access, grade and utilities before you drive out.

I am moving from out of state. Can we do this from a distance?

Yes, to a point. We can send the county records, the MLS facts and photos ahead of your visit and answer the site questions by phone. You will still want to see the land and the town in person before you close, and we will plan that trip around what matters to you.

Which part of the county should I look at?

That depends on what you want from the property. The Parkway side of the county is the high ground, the New River side is the water, and the Interstate 77 corridor has the shortest drives and, at the exits, public water and sewer. Tell us how you plan to use the property and we will point you at the areas that fit it.

Do you work in Galax and the neighboring counties too?

Yes. Carroll County is home, and we work across Grayson, Wythe, Pulaski, Montgomery and Floyd counties as well as the City of Galax.
