What is The Crooked Road?
The Crooked Road is a 330-mile heritage music driving trail through the mountains of Southwest Virginia, marked by highway signs and begun as a concept in January 2003. It connects ten major venues and more than 60 affiliated venues and festivals. Near Carroll County its stops include the Blue Ridge Music Center near Parkway mile marker 213 and the Rex Theatre in the City of Galax.
A music heritage idea in January 2003, and 330 miles of highway signs since
Patrick County's comprehensive plan dates the idea to the month. The concept for The Crooked Road: Virginia's Music Heritage Trail began in January 2003, the plan says, to promote the traditional music, history and culture of the region.
What came of it is a route rather than a single place. The same plan says highway signage identifies the 330-mile route as it winds through the region's terrain. The organization behind it describes The Crooked Road as "a 330 mile driving trail through the mountains of Southwest Virginia" that connects ten Major Venues and over 60 Affiliated Venues and Festivals. The venue list and the calendar of events are the organization's to keep, so the current list comes from The Crooked Road itself.
A search of the Code of Virginia for this page turned up no statute that designates The Crooked Road. The county plans that mention it describe a driving route and, in Carroll County's case, a policy of support, not a status created by law.
For land, that is the practical point. No source read for this page attaches a rule of its own to the route signs. A parcel with road frontage on a signed stretch fronts whatever road the route follows there, and the entrance question goes to whoever maintains that road: the VDOT residency for a state-maintained road, and the city for a street inside Galax.
From Floyd County through Patrick and Meadows of Dan, then into Carroll
Patrick County's plan traces the route across its own ground. In Patrick County, it says, the trail begins along Route 8 from Floyd County, continues along U.S. Highway 58 into the Town of Stuart, and then runs back along U.S. 58 to Meadows of Dan before traveling into neighboring Carroll County.
Meadows of Dan is the last place Patrick County's plan names before the route travels into Carroll County. Which county Meadows of Dan itself sits in is answered in what county Meadows of Dan is in.
Carroll County's 2024 comprehensive plan picks the route up from there. It describes The Crooked Road as a driving route through the coalfields, the Appalachian Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, and its Policy 7.7 is to support the development and programming of the trail. The plan names two stops, the Blue Ridge Music Center and the Rex Theatre, and a few sentences later places the Rex Theatre in the City of Galax.
That second detail matters on a map. Galax is an independent city that belongs to no county, so a stop inside the city is not on county ground; the full answer is in what county Galax is in. The regional name Carroll, Grayson and Galax share is explained in what the Twin Counties are, and the county's trails, fishing and music are on the Welcome to Carroll County page.
The Music Center near Milepost 213 and the Rex Theatre inside Galax
The two stops Carroll County's plan names sit on different kinds of ground, and the difference is a small lesson in how this corner of Virginia is divided.
The Blue Ridge Music Center, the plan says, is near mile marker 213 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, in both Carroll and Grayson counties. The National Park Service lists Galax 10 miles away and places the center at the crossroads of two music heritage routes: Virginia's The Crooked Road and the Blue Ridge Music Trails of North Carolina. The center is a Park Service site on the Parkway, whose right-of-way the United States holds and the National Park Service administers. The concert schedule is the Park Service's to publish.
The Rex Theatre is the other stop, and it stands in the City of Galax, a point the Carroll plan itself makes. Its ground answers to the city rather than to either county. Felts Park, the fiddlers' convention grounds and the rest of the city's land are covered on the page for Galax VA real estate.
U.S. 58, the highway Patrick County's plan follows into Carroll, is also the road the Department of Conservation and Recreation gives for reaching Grayson Highlands State Park from Interstate 77 at the Hillsville exit. That park is high country near Mount Rogers and a subject of its own, covered in what Grayson Highlands State Park is.

Questions this raises
Is the Rex Theatre in Carroll County?
No. Carroll County's 2024 comprehensive plan counts the Rex Theatre as one of two Crooked Road stops, then places it in the City of Galax. Galax is an independent city that belongs to no county, so the ground under the Rex Theatre answers to the city and not to either county.
Did Virginia law create The Crooked Road?
A search of the Code of Virginia for this page found no statute that designates it. Patrick County's plan says the concept began in January 2003 to promote the region's traditional music, history and culture, and highway signs now mark its 330-mile route. Carroll County's plan supports it as a matter of policy. The sources read here describe a signed route and a regional program, not a status created by law.
Why is the Blue Ridge Music Center called a crossroads?
The National Park Service places it at the crossroads of two music heritage routes: Virginia's The Crooked Road and the Blue Ridge Music Trails of North Carolina. Carroll County's plan puts the center near mile marker 213 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, in both Carroll and Grayson counties, and NPS lists Galax 10 miles away. The center's concert schedule comes from the Park Service.
